Fractional expertise for non-profits

25 September 2025

Nonprofits often face the challenge of increasing their impact while carefully managing limited budgets. This is why I want to highlight a key point from Forbes' article, "20 ways nonprofits can build capacity with small teams".

Although surprised at how far down the list this is ranked (17th), the point titled Engaging fractional staff members, resonates deeply with me. It emphasises the value of hiring fractional experts who provide specialised skills to nonprofits without the financial commitment of full-time positions.

As a fractional Chief of Staff, I have witnessed the transformative effects this model can have:

🟣 Budget-friendly expertise: Fractional staffing allows nonprofits to access top-tier skills and strategic guidance tailored to their specific needs without straining their budget. By hiring experts who focus on deliverables that enhance infrastructure, nonprofits can scale smartly and sustainably.

🟣 Laser-focused execution: Fractional professionals are typically brought in to tackle high-priority initiatives. We hit the ground running and concentrate on accelerating results, whether that means increasing donor engagement, improving operations, or launching new programs.

🟣 Flexibility meets impact: Facing tight timelines or growing demands? Fractional roles are designed for adaptability, making them ideal for organisations that need to align resources with priorities while pursuing ambitious goals.

Why this matters

Given its significant potential, I believe this point should be prioritised when nonprofits assess how to build capacity effectively. The sector is known for its resourcefulness and by thinking creatively about staffing models, smaller organisations can unlock exponential impact.
